5 Summer Reads for Every Entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, you must push yourself to learn and expand your knowledge whenever possible. With all of us spending much more time at home this summer than in past years, give yourself some time sit down, open up a good book, and learn. Here are five books I recommend every entrepreneur to read.

High Growth Handbook by Elad Gil

Gil is a well-known technology executive and angel investor who has worked with high growth tech companies like Airbnb, Twitter, Google, Instacart, and Coinbase (to name a few). The High Growth Handbook is just as it says … a handbook for navigating challenges around organizational structure, late-stage funding, culture, internationalization, buying other companies, and so much more.

The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by T.J. Stiles

Want a little history? Check out Stiles The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt. It’s a well-done biography of Vanderbilt—a visionary man who pioneered brand new business models. Unschooled, Vanderbilt rose to the top of New York’s social elite and defied all odds. Along with his incredible life story, it’s a book filled with adventure and emerging business ideas perfect for any entrepreneur.

Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy

Written in 1963, Confessions of an Advertising Man is a required reading for many advertising classes across the United States. It focuses on the tactics and techniques of marketing and advertising while giving a good perspective on branding and messaging.

Leadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin

If there was ever a turbulent time—it’s now. Open up Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times, which gives a great view on early development, growth, and exercise of leadership. Focusing on the challenges experienced by Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson, Goodwin makes us all question whether leaders are born or created over time.

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance

Vance details Musk’s life from childhood up to his most recent venture at SpaceX, Tesla and SolarCity. The book showcases the difficult challenges and hurdles Musk had to overcome in order to achieve success. There is no doubt that true grit and perseverance aided in Musk’s empire of successful businesses.
